Take off with maths
It is surprising how many children believe they hate maths or simply ‘can’t do it’. More often than not, this has nothing to do with their mathematical ability and everything to do with their mindset.
Negative attitudes to maths often manifest at a very early age and can arise for a variety of reasons. Once embedded, children rapidly lose confidence and become increasingly disillusioned with maths. The ‘one size fits all’ and fast-moving pace of the primary curriculum make it difficult for children to catch up and they often fall increasingly behind.
The good news is that the right support can make all the difference. At Flying Start, we believe in fostering an ‘I can’ approach to maths. We know that a positive mindset is crucial in order for effective learning to take place so we teach our students how to overcome negative beliefs about maths so that they are soon calculating with confidence.
Lessons are fun, interactive and cover a range of core topics including written and mental arithmetic strategies, place value, fractions, decimals and percentage, problem solving, time, money and data handling.
