Did you know we run an online poetry club, led by the brilliant Andrea? Every week they meet up, talk about poetry and of course, write poems, limericks…you name it.

Recently they did a re-working of the John Hegley poem: What a poem’s not. Get yourself a nice cup of tea, settle back and enjoy reading their version, What a Friend is Not. Then you can compare our Flying Starters poem by watching John Hegley read his original version.

What a Friend is Not

A friend is not an Apple
But there’s something good at the core
A friend is not a Backpack
But they can help to carry you
A friend is not a Compass
But they may lead you
A friend is not the Dawn
But they can brighten your day
A friend is not an Egg
Even though you may sometimes crack their shell
A friend is not just a Friend
But they can be your best buddy
A friend is not a Glue stick
But you may stick together forever
A friend is not a Heater
But they may keep you warm
A friend is not an Igloo
But they can be cool
A friend is not a Jester
But they often make you laugh
A friend is not a Kayak
But sometimes they make you paddle quite hard
A friend is not a Lingerer
But a stay-witherer
A friend is not a Millionaire
But they can enrich you

A friend is not a Mirror
But they can show you who you are
A friend is not a Notebook
But sometimes they remember things that you have forgotten (like your favourite
cookie recipe)
A friend is not an Overcoat
But they can protect you
A friend is not a Piece of Paper
So don’t scribble on them
A friend is not a Quest
But they can be a challenge at times
A friend is not a Rocking-chair
So don’t sit on them
A friend is not a Socket
But they may sometimes switch off
A friend is not someone who gets you in Trouble
But they may get in trouble with you!
A friend is not a Ukelele
But you can be in harmony
A friend is not a Vaccum
Even though they clean up for you
A friend is not a Wide-brimmed hat
But they can keep you cool
A Friend is not an X-box
But you may often play with them
A friend is not Yellow
They’re not a kind of fruit
A friend is not Zoom
So you don’t need to mute!

Brilliant effort by all. They are currently working on rhymes and limericks, so keep an eye out for their work in future posts. We can’t wait to share their poetry with you.
