Online Support for Children Home from School

In order to support our Flying Start family and the wider community, we are planning to offer some extra online activities for our students over the coming weeks. We are mindful that many of you may be faced with working from home whilst also caring for your children and we are keen to support you as best as we can.

Our aim is to run some free online lessons and activities and some virtual workshops and courses to help pupils and parents during this time. Along with a Facebook Support Group, offering advice on home educating your child, resources for your child’s virtual learning, free virtual workshops and lessons, guidance on using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to keep your child motivated..and more! The group will provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions and for our qualified teachers, home educators and NLP practitioners to share resources, tips and advice as we all strive to support each other during these difficult times.

To be the first to hear about free online lessons and activities, register your interest using the form below.

(Don’t worry – you won’t be added to a mailing list – only emailed the details about virtual lessons, activities and workshops once we’ve finalised the details.)

Covid-19 Update – 18/03/20

Due to venue and staffing issues, we have taken the decision to cease lessons at our Chesham, Amersham, Jordans and Berryfields centres with immediate effect. As of Wednesday, 18th March, all lessons at these centres will switch over to our online virtual classrooms. Lessons in Little Chalfont will continue as normal this Wednesday and Thursday and will then switch to online lessons as of Monday 23rd March.

Online lessons

Your child’s online lesson will take place at their usual lesson time, during term time. Where possible, your child’s usual tutor will take the lessons but this may not always be possible. All your child needs to access this is a computer or device such as an iPad, with a built-in or external microphone and camera. In addition, we will upload any documents that your child needs for their lesson, such as worksheets or vocabulary lists, into the homework area for their class.

How to access online lessons

You should have recently received an email with processes attached for logging onto our virtual classrooms. Please test your log in as soon as you can so we can iron out any problems promptly. When your child’s lesson is due to take place, please follow the process for pupils accessing online lessons.

 Missed lessons

If your child is unable to access their online lesson, they can still do the work by downloading it from the ‘course homework/resource files’ area. The progress report contains the activities and relevant page numbers covered in the lesson as well as the homework for the week. If they would like to join an alternative online lesson for that week, this may be possible – please contact our team and request the slot they would like to join, giving us as much notice as possible.

Learning websites

Please also remember that your child(ren) has access to various online sites such as Education City and Education Quizzes so please do encourage them to make the most of these.

There are a number of free online learning sites and some that are usually subscription-based that are now offering free access for a period of time to support families during the school closures.

Holiday tuition and mock tests

Due to the current uncertainty we have taken the difficult decision to cancel some of our Easter courses and holiday camp days and we will contact you individually if you have booked these. We plan to run some of our 11+ and GCSE workshops online and will circulate details once these are confirmed.

We are very much hoping that this situation will have resolved by the May half term and summer holidays and that all our holiday courses and mock tests will go ahead in the venues, as planned. If it has not, please rest assured that we will do our best to ensure all our students receive the tuition they need via virtual classrooms and exam rooms.

Extra support

Once we are fully up and running with our new online system, we are hoping to offer some extra online activities for our students. We are mindful that many of you may be faced with working from home whilst also caring for your children and we are keen to support our Flying Start family as best as we can. We will keep you posted and hope that you will bear with us through any teething issues we may encounter as we make the swap to our virtual classrooms.

Support from Other Flying Start Parents

If you’d like to talk to other Flying Start parents or have any questions, we have a page on social media app Classlist which provides a forum for discussion between members of the page. Only Flying Start parents are permitted to join the page so it is a closed forum. We also have a member of staff on the page to answer any questions. If you are already a member of your child’s school on Classlist, you can still join Flying Start’s page with the same login.
Join our Classlist page here.

Office hours

Our friendly customer service team will continue to be here to support you and are on the end of a phone or email. Office hours may vary in the coming weeks as we all adjust to working remotely but we will endeavour to respond to any queries as soon as possible. If you would like to get in touch, please contact us on the usual number: 01494 772898 or email us: hello@flyingtarttuition.co.uk.

We hope you all stay safe and well during these challenging times.

Best wishes, The Flying Start team
